Here are some of the ways in which names can be used in Excel:
- Navigation
I find this really useful and therefore name cells that I need to go to frequently.
- Naming assumptions or ranges which are then used in formulae
This is personal preference, but I prefer not to use names in this way.
- In macros
Any references to cells in macros should always use names, as macros don’t recognise cell movements (for example if a row is inserted).
- Printing
It can be useful to print using named ranges.
Here are some time-saving tips for working with names:
1. Different ways of naming cells:
-
- Ctrl F3, then press Alt N for New.
- Formulas -> Define Name (Alt MMD).
- Right menu, then Define Name (usually A).
2. If there is text in the cell to be named, or above, or to the left of this cell, then Excel will suggest this as the name.
3. To go to a named cell, use F5 then Tab and then the first letter of the name. If there is more than one name beginning with the letter, then keep pressing the letter (or use the down arrow).
4. To return to where you just came from (having used F5 and a name) press F5 Enter. This is a great way to navigate around a model. Also, F5 keeps a track of the last few recent places.
5. To use a name in a formula, press F3 and then select the required name.
